The right to accept the inheritance must be exercised within 10 years of the opening of the succession. According to Article 459 of the Civil Code, the inheritance is acquired at the time of acceptance.

- Simple acceptance: the heir has fully accepted all the assets of the deceased , which from that moment flow into the heir's assets (e.g. the heir, in the event of debts of the deceased, will be liable for them with a single estate, made up of the sum of the assets inherited and his own personal assets);
- Acceptance with benefit of inventory: the heir has accepted the inheritance, but his assets remain separate from the deceased 's assets (e.g. the heir, in the event of debts of the deceased, will be liable only by drawing on the deceased 's assets and therefore not also with his own personal assets).
